It works windowed, but won't even let me attempt to switch to fullscreen. S&K Collection isn't the only one, another example is Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure for the PC.
Sonic & Knuckles Collection would not detect it and ran way too fast while windowed, but fullscreen was fineĪs I said, there's a patch for the Sonic & Knuckles Collection speed problems.Īs for fullscreen, I don't know what the problem there is, but I've got various '90s-era games which will not work in fullscreen. I got that older computer like two months before XP came out. Still, compatibility between the two is not the same, particularly if we're talking about an early '00s XP machine or something, closer to my late '01 ME computer (P4 1500 Mhz, 32MB GeForce2, etc) than my Core 2 Duo Vista machine (NVidia GeForce 8800, etc.). (That is, ME compatibility is better, which makes sense considering that it's Win95-based and is on top of DOS, not WinNT 32-bit native stuff like XP.).
though the difference from ME to XP is much larger than that from XP to Vista, I would say. XP isn't Vista, older-game compatibility is slightly better in XP than Vista.
I've also tried (on my newer machine) the demos (but not the full versions) of the Sega PC versions of Daytona USA (runs, though with lots of graphical glitches that make playing it not too fun), Sega Rally Championship (works okay), Sega Rally 2 (works well there's an annoying joystick issue in the menus, but gameplay isn't affected), and Sonic CD (doesn't run). The game has internet play, but not save to disk? What kind of idiot decided THAT one?).
Getting it to properly recognize my joystick took a little work, and I think it might have some audio issues, but the game actually works and is playable on the newer machine, which is more than I can say for these other games.Īs for other Sega PC games, I also have the PC-exclusive Scud: Industrial Evolution, which is a reasonably fun top-down action game that's worth a try, and does work on my newer machine (though the password-only save system is utterly mystifying. Panzer Dragoon - This one actually works on both machines. It's just incredibly stupid that the game has no saving even on PC, that was barely tolerable on the Genesis (this game came out in 1996 remember, there was NO excuse!), but on PC it's just insane. I mean, what is the point of Sonic R without its ridiculously strange and yet awesome soundtrack? Sonic 3D Blast works fine on that machine, though, and is intact.
On my older (WinME) machine, they work, but this version of Sonic R is hopelessly broken because it has no music.
Sonic 3D & Sonic R Double Pack - Expert Software jewel edition - Neither of these games works on my newer computer at all. It works fine on my older '01 WinME machine, though. I hate playing PC games windowed, so that's a big deal for me. There is a (official) patch that fixes the game's speed problems, so patched it will run, but it won't work in fullscreen on my newer computer (the '07 Vista one). Sonic & Knuckles Collection - Contains Sonic 3, Sonic & Knuckles, Sonic 3 & Knuckles, and the Sonic 1 + Knuckles near-infinite bonus game. They range between semi-functional and nonfunctional on newer machines, and even on older ones they had issues. There's already a list, yes, but as for what I think of them.
